Codemasters have confirmed that a sequel to DiRT 2 is indeed in the works.

DiRT 3 is in development at the company's Birmingham studio, and will bring a fresh look to the franchise.

“It’s all about letting the teams just innovate. There’s some great stuff coming from Birmingham that’s going into DiRT 3," said Codemasters VP Gavin Cheshire said in an interview with Edge magazine.

Cheshire also rumoured that they are looking to "fly the flag a bit more" in DiRT 3, bringing the game back over to the UK instead of relying on the previous games' US centric structure.

DiRT 3 is pencilled in for a 2011 release.
