No!

-------

I've got no intention of sticking Boot Camp on. We use Parallels at work, and running Windows on an iMac just seems... wrong. I've not got any software that needs Windows, and don't give a fuck about PC gaming - that's why I have consoles.

I didn't realise it was actually such a jump between the two 21.5" models?

RAM slots: four on the current entry-level, or just the 2010? The Apple page makes it quite clear that the entry-level one can only be upgraded to 8GB while the others can go to 16GB.

Even price wasn't a factor, I think 27" would be too big for me. SSD would of course be lovely, but it's a pretty big price jump.

Three years of Applecare would be very handy if via Mrs Tez's ( ) discount.

The ones we have at work are the 2010 entry-level ones, like Slicker has. Only issues I've ever had with them have been:

- while running Windows
- while using Mac versions of MS Office... The rainbow wheel of death appears regularly!

Mine did have a HDD failure, but it was an older one that had also been used as a server for some reason. I don't think the drive liked the constant use.

I'm not sure about the RAM in this year's model, but mine is 4 slots at 16GB. Though there was a 2010 and mid-2010 model.

If you use those at work and they're fine, then imagine the same but better spec. The entry level iMacs are great value for most people.

All of the current macs are pretty decent speed wise, though I'd deffo hang on a few weeks for the upgrades, I'd be shocked if there weren't new mac by or on WWDC.

Either way, as you'll probably know by using them at work, Macs keep that brand new fresh computer speed for much longer than an equivalent windows PC. Mine still feels as fast as the day I got it, and that's with zero maintenance. It goes without saying that I couldn't recommend an iMac more highly.

Oh, yeah, I'm sure the entry level would be perfectly fine for me. Just wondering if it would be worth it holding out a bit longer and going for the next 21.5" up. But I think 500GB HDD and 8GB RAM will do me (if they do now only have two slots).

I'm definitely going to wait for the 2012 range. Be stupid to rush out now and buy one, only for them to get the refresh in June.

Right, from reading reviews and Wikipedia it seems that *all* iMacs do have four RAM slots and can take 16GB... it's just that Apple will only go up to 8GB for the entry level model. From some benchmarks I've seen, it also doesn't seem like there's a significant difference between the 2.5GHz Core i5 / Radeon HD 6750M entry level 21.5" model and the 2.7GHz Core i5 / Radeon HD 6770M model up...Not enough to be worth another £250, anyway. Sure, the model up has more customisation options (Core i7, which would make a big difference over both i5 models, HDD size, SSD), but those all cost ££££ more and must be done at time of purchase.

So really, for me, the only real difference is the HDD size... And another 500GB of space I don't really need isn't worth £250.

Still, things may change with the 2012 models...

Quick question that's slightly unrelated, but still related.

I get horrendously low frames per second on my 21.5 iMac with a 6770M in Battlefield 3. If I put the full 16GB of RAM in, will that resolve my FPS problem?

Probably not, I presume you tried lowering the graphics settings. Considered Battlefield was developed mainly for the 2 main consoles that only have 512MB RAM, RAM shouldn't be the problem.

Just checked what Geordie said about Applecare... he's right! :)

If you buy an iMac via the Higher Education store, it comes with 3 years of repair coverage and 1 year of phone support, instead of 1 year of repair coverage and 90 days of phone support. If you really want it, there's a £45.60 "uplift" to take the phone support to 3 years too (making it fully like a normal Applecare). I hadn't noticed it before myself as it doesn't tell you until you select an iMac and then open up the details... the main page for iMacs just says it has the standard warranty like on the normal Store.

Anyone heard the rumours of a $700 Macbook Air? I hope they are accurate was that's the price I'd finally get a Mac. Been using the iPhone for years and using a Mac at work has made me love it.
