So, Bump.

If you follow me on twitter you'd know I'm back on a health kick. I've had a treadmill for years but putting in the hours is hard because I get bored... so I got a cheap telly and mounted it in front of the treadmill, hooked it up to the Sky and it has a built in DVD player, so now instead of coming home and crashing in front of the telly for a few episodes of Star Trek/Stargate/Whatever I now watch them whilst on the treadmill and it's easy street.

I normally watch 2 episodes of Star Trek and do 8km in 1.5 hours which is 5-600 calories burnt. Been on it 4-5 nights a week for a month or so and I'm already a stone down and feeling pretty good.

Just thought I'd share. Anyone else on a health kick at the moment?

I've been doing a lot of riding on an off. I won't ride for a month, then I'll do 50km in a day.

I've just bought some inline skates to go around the marina and the lake promenade where I live. We'll see how much that burns off.

Nice one mate. I'm pissed off with how busy my DW Sports gym gets now, sometimes it's impossible to get on any machine so I'm thinking of purchasing a cross trainer or a rower for home use. Treadmills are out as I have recurring shin splints. Good idea with the tv, think I'll get bored staring at the garage wall.

Try this mate: http://gizmodo.com/5902699/banish-shin- ... l-exercise

I've also got a fitbit ultra pedometer type thing and it's awesome. It links up with their website and app http://www.fitbit.com (which is free to use anyway). I'm loving it, it's got a good food logged section and it's works out most of your goals automatically. You get achievements based on how many steps you've taken or distance covered or floors climbed (the pedometer can measure that too). It even can monitor your sleep. It's amazingly accurate, on the treadmill I normally do 4km in 45 minutes at 5.4km/h, the pedometer uploaded a 4.1km session in 46 minutes at 5.4km/h and included the little while between me pressing finish and it slowing down to a stop.

As for the TV, best investment ever. £100 for a TV with DVD player. 2 episodes of Star Trek later that's the best part of 700 calories burnt, do that every week night and if your diet is break even anyway you'll lose around a kilo a week easy, that's 2/3 stone a month.

I'd recommend a treadmill very highly, walking/jogging/running will always burn more calories than cycling or rowing in the same amount of time and for me that's the main thing. No one like exercise so why spend more time doing it than you need to.

*note* just read it back and it sounds a little ranty and I kind of assumed your in it to lose weight (which I am), sorry if it does sounds like a rant. Wasn't meant.

Have you tried getting your gait looked at? I was having problems last year when running lots ready for a 10k so went to a specialist shop to get my gait looked at, and my socks I wore etc. Before I was having to ice my shins after a run and they still hurt, but after I got shoes appropriate for my feet I've had no problems since.

So I've now been using my fitbit Ultra for a month and well:

6.6kg down, that's more than a stone in a month. Feeling really chuffed with my progress. Still a fair way to go, but I'm feeling pretty great.

I highly recommend the Fitbit + Treadmill + Star Trek Combo for losing weight.

Well done Phlash. I'm getting ready for me 10k two weeks on Sunday. Got a GPS watch today to help with the runs, it's all good.

Re: Gym

Just wanted to add. Phlash has inspired me to try something similar. I can't really justify purchasing a treadmill at the moment, so I've signed up to the local gym.

I realised I have all five series of the wire, and I've only ever watched the first episode. I just haven't had the time. So taking inspiration from Phlash, I've begun ripping the DVDs to my Mac and putting them on my iPad. I'm working from home a lot now, so I'm tempted to go down at 7am when most people will have already left to get ready for work.

Screwed up a bit as I put the wrong file on my iPad, so it cut out the last 15 mins or so, but even so, those 45mins went surprising quickly. End result, I burnt 447 calories in 45 mins at 4.5kph and 10-degree incline. Once I get a bit fitter, I'll hit it up to 5.5kph at 10 degrees incline.

Way I see it, if I do two episodes a day, five days a week, that's six weeks worth of stuff to watch. I've also got a couple of seasons of House to catch up on, and I'm planning on buying Stargate SG1 and Atlantis on DVD too.

I'm also looking at buying one of these.
http://www.nike.com/fuelband/

One of my mates who works for one of the local version of the Metro reviewed it a couple of weeks ago and ended up buying one of his own. He said it was that good. Apparently it's better than a pedometer, because it's able to measure so much more. It's even able to calculate accurately the amount of calories burned in everything from brushing your teeth through to playing guitar, as well as the sports you'd expect.

Killing the boredom really helps IMO.

I was looking at the fuelband, I didn't realise it did calories. Because for weight loss Nike Fuel points means shit. I'm happy with my fitbit ultra at the moment as it's working great for me and since most of my exercise is walking/jogging at the moment it's very accurate. I'm planning on starting to do some weights and toning by the end of the month so it might change things. I've heard good things about the fuelband too, though I've heard it more useful for people who are already healthy and in good shape rather than people in bad shape. Quite a bit more pricey though.

Well done.

I've gained quite a bit of a beer gut/barrel the last few years and I'm going to shift it. I'm quite surprised at how low and down I have been feeling due to my weight gain.

Joined the gym near work as it works out at £2.50 each time I go and it has access to a swimming pool and sauna.

I'm trying to limit myself to two beers a week and trying to avoid carbs.

You want to start logging your calories and activities, it'll help you pin point where you are and what you need to do to lose weight. Not doing so is like saving money for something without doing a budget. See what you're eating, see what you're burning and then make changes so you're burning more than you're eating. Simple.

I have just purchased the Garmin Forerunner 110 GPS watch with HRM (upgrade from using my gps enabled phone).

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... zone=PDPz1

Your right about keeping track of progress. I have been logging my cycling activity on the website www.strava.com and that is great for motivation. I'm following various local cyclists and although I'm well off the pace, its tapped into my competitive side and its great.
