GAME in trouble?

Postby Kevin on Wed Feb 01, 2012 4:50 pm

Over Christmas my Sister said to me that GAME in town were in trouble, she said they took out a loan and didn't pay it all back, or had a few weeks left to pay it off and didn't think they would be able to pay it all off. I kinda didn't believe her, well I did, but I just thought, it's GAME, nothing's gonna happen to GAME.

Seems she was right, looks like GAME are heading into trouble.

http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2012/02/01/nowgamer-claim-game-wont-have-stock-of-any-new-games/comment-page-2/
GAME might be struggling to stock new videogame releases.

The site has quoted an unnamed source who said that the retailer has “lost credit assurance with most of its publishers.”

If the company has lost this assurance then publishers will not allow GAME to stock their games due to the financial risk involved. “If true, it could have a huge impact on the upcoming PS Vita launch,” says the story, although doesn’t state that one of the publishers is Sony.

NowGamer’s source also states that staff wages will be withheld in an attempt to make GAME Groups finances appear better than they are, which seems baffling.

We’ve reached out to our contacts at the retailer for comment.

In the meantime, trade magazine MCV has refuted these claims, “we can absolutely confirm that GAME has NOT ‘lost credit assurance with most of its publishers’” it tweeted.

Update: NowGamer seems to have misunderstood or misrepresented the story.

MCV has already been in touch with Game and has been assured that, although there are concerns over the retailers credit insurance (markedly not “assurance”), their relationship with publishers is still good and new releases will, of course, still be available this Friday.

We’re still waiting to hear back from our contacts at Game.

Update 2: We’ve just heard from an anonymous employee at the retailer who told us their pay was late, confirming at least one of the allegations above.

Update 3: It appears it’s the ‘sale or return’ that GAME has lost with the publishers in question, something backed up by Eurogamer. This basically means that any games not sold can’t just be sent back to the publisher, and GAME is being asked to pay upfront for these games now.

I just quoted the whole news story, cos I think this is potentially a disaster. Firstly, this is only a rumor right now so we should be careful and not believe it, but there is normally always an element of truth in most rumors. I am worried for what this means for Gamestation, Blockbuster and Gameplay.com, who I think are all linked together?

Well if GAME go, surely that means Gameplay go too, HMV have already said they slowing down selling games. Whose really left in the UK apart from supermarkets?

Good thing, closer and closer to the 100% console digital download future!

The industry and the economy around it isn't ready or GAME group to collapse yet. We need them for another 10 years.

Saying they seem to be the only place offering ME3 N7 editions for pre-order this isn't great.

Only an absolute moron would clap at the thought of yet more retail jobs being lost, the people working in game are likely to be unskilled or working to pay for education, they might not be your idea of the people you would like selling your games and the company might sell games for more than you are willing to pay, but at least we have a choice!

The Internet infrastructure isn't ready for all digital, as a lot of people don't have speeds that make it worth it yet.

GAME Group is a huge part of the European game market. A good portion of the market buy games and consoles in stores still. Sure Supermarkets and other stores sell games and consoles, but it's not their main market which is why many people (myself included) still go to specialist stores.

Console manufacturers don't have the outlet to sell their own hardware directly, while the collapse of the biggest games retailer will make a dent in the industry from all sides.

Publishers/Developers need specialist stores to exist and consoles to survive/be popular, because we won't see smaller games in Tesco and specialist stores typically offer better prices than generic stores. Online stores like Amazon would be fine, but again not everybody does that.

Oh and jobs. People losing jobs and companies collapsing hurts our economy more.

I would argue that the majority of people do have speeds enough for all digital gaming market.

On-line retailers and most electronic stores sell the hardware. but they don't need specialist stores if the consoles were direct to drive systems.

Not everyone does but they will eventually.

Thats the only bad thing I can see at all from the outcome of a retail company going out of business. Clothes stores are always shutting down people working there are losing their jobs. That's part and parcel of retail when it booms it booms when it isn't good bye job.

The problem is we're in transition.

Whilst the infrastructure isn't ready for all digital, it's a possibility for some and they tend to also be the most profitable section of the market for shops like GAME. There's no reason next gen consoles should all have the option for you to go completely digital if you so desire.

I agree it's shitty to clap applaud people losing jobs and it's not good for customers or the industry as a whole in the short term. But it's part of the process that gets us to a better future.

The same thing happened to music. Music chains and independents went down, and even the mega chains (Like Virgin and HMV) have either been swept away or brought to their knees. But now we have online services that have millions of songs, easily found and bought in an instant. Yeah, we might of lost something on the way, but I think we've also gained things. Disaster is ahead for some, opportunity is there for others.

One of the major game retailers going out of business is only bad for the industry. That's not to mention the thousands of job losses in the middle of a recession which is not good at all. How anyone can clap their demise is beyond me. As for the so called digital future that Kevin keeps going on about, you do realise that would put virtually all high street retailers out of business. This would have a knock on effect with warehousing, drivers etc. I think its good to have the option of digital downloads but 100% digital would be bad for the industry and consumers
