Right, nothing officially announced but Sony is expected to bring the rain quite soon. VG247 is reporting the following rumours...

Nikkei (via Andriasang) is reporting that PSP2 with come with 3G on-board, as previously rumoured, but won’t allow for phone calls.

The handheld’s 3G service in Japan will be provided by NTT DoCoMo. Gamers will be able to use the 3G connection to play online games and download software and movies.The system will feature wireless LAN support.The paper also reports that the new console will make use of an OLED touch screen. Sony has developed a new processor for handling high resolution visuals.

Pricing on the next generation PSP is currently TBA, according to Nikkei.The console is yet to be announced by Sony, but it’s expected that the company will unveil the device at a press conference in Tokyo on January 27.

I have a PSP but, to be honest, I don't often play it. The battery life on the thing is awful and it doesn't have that many decent games. Every now and again there will be a release which I'll nab and blitz but, outside of Monster Hunter Freedon Unite, Dissidia, Half Minute Hero, Peace Walker and the upcoming Tactics Ogre... the system has nothing going for it. All of it's other features go entirely unused by myself.

Part of me wonders why Sony is even bothering with a new one. Perhaps they'll surprise me?

The playstation branded phone has been confirmed for ages hasn't it? I've seen pictures of it.


I'll be very interested to se what type of media they choose for the PSP2. IMO digital downloads and UMDs were both rubbish. I bought a PSP from japan when it was released and then bought a go when they came out. the Go was nothing short of a disaster, the store pricing is a joke. The only good thing was that I managed to score a load of free games via various promotions and offers.

If Sony do do digital distribution again they really need to re-think their business model. Something more like the App store and less like Harrods.

Sony has never commented on the Playstation Phone, but every picture "leaked" along with every video shows it to be running on Android.

The build though... looks really naff. Like original DS naff. And I can't believe the front end would be basic Android?

We'll see. I wouldn't get one though. I expect that if the Phone is indeed real it will just utilize the PSN and be another way of obtaining the same games? I mean who would make games exclusively for the Playstation Phone if the PSP 2 is coming?

If everything I've heard about PSP2 is true, I might have to buy it. I'm more excited for PSP2 then 3DS at the moment, 3G would be brilliant. Hope psp2 games come with trophies and that your PSN name shows psp2 games on your profile.

The SONY/PSP2 press conference will be held at 6am UK time on Thursday morning!

I've heard it's cos SONYS phone part of the company wanted the PlayStation brand on their devices, but PlayStation didn't want this. But in the end kinda said, fine, take the PlayStation brand. So there's where the PlayStation phone comes from.
