Shenmue 1 and 2 HD coming to XBLA

Sega is ready to release HD updates of cult Dreamcast classics Shenmue and Shenmue 2, according to a new report.
Shenmue HD and Shenmue 2 HD will be released on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, Gamerzines claimed.
Indeed development of both titles has been finished for over a year, an anonymous source said. The hold up was due to Sega working out the future of the Shenmue franchise, apparently. "Namely, whether or not Shenmue 3 would ever see the light of day," said the report.
If true, Shenmue's HD revamp follows similar efforts with other cult Dreamcast games. Sega recently announced Jet Set Radio HD, due out this summer.

I'm glad, and I'll be buying them. But in all honesty, it's about five years too late.

The problem is that gaming has changed quite a bit. I found that out the hard way when I tried to play Silent Hill 2 again recently. I just couldn't get on with the controls for the life of me.

I have a horrible feeling it could be the same with this. Hoepfully Sega will also overhaul the control system, but that might be too much effort for re-releases.

Slicker hasn't posted because he's just died of excitement. Or maybe sadness, sadness at the thought that Shenmue 3's green-light hinges on the success of these HD remakes.

I loved Shemue to bits when I finished it after many many hours on the original Xbox.
To me it was Outcast on PC then Shenmue that lead the way for Mass Effect.Land mark game.
BUT!....after all these years, unless they have the original audio source files the sound quality will be TERRIBLE.The control scheme will be totally unacceptable by todays standards.
The game as a whole could feel really old, and could really hit a mild, warm reception .It's one of those games that is better off left in your memories,because while it's in your thoughts it's still ground breaking .
To be honest (ive said this before) they should consolidate the first 2 games and the figure out what would have been the 3rd game.Take all the best bits and make something completely new and just call it "shenmue".
Sega have absolutely no hope in hell of ever doing anything that matches their ageing legacy though.

It's been in development for over a year now. Hopefully in that time, they'll have addressed the control system.

The fact is with video games, it's not like a DVD where you release a HD version and be done with it. The control system would be a relic of the late 90s, and would significantly detract from its success. However, revamp it and get it right and they could be on to a winner.

Judging by SEGA's HD XBLA games, the core game will not be touched. Shenmue is a game that I love to bits but also a game that I completely understand why people don't like it either.

There's no way in hell that these games will do critically well now, but the rabid fanboys (me) will still be beating off to it. It's just a habit with some older games that a majority will not be able to accept the time machine to older gameplay mechanics but the minority will probably be like THIS IS WHEN GAMING WAS GOOD!

Regardless, I'm very excited. I've been considering unhooking my Dreamcast, as the vast majority of games that I still play on it are now on/coming to XBLA and other services. It means I get to keep these games forever, which is great news.

Funnily enough, I didn't know until I read this thread. I knew of the "been done for over a year" rumour, but I haven't read this recent gossip.

I usually dig out the DC to play both games every couple of years. Part of me would rather just play the originals but i will buy these to show support.
