But on the other hand, potentially having 3 PowerPC cores (from the current 360), a ARM core for a low power mode and then 4-8 x86 type cores all in one machine... sounds like it could be a bit of a nightmare to code for.

Backwards compatibility should be a given. Even the 3DS takes DS carts, I bought three Castlevania games the other day for dirt cheap and can enjoy them without pissing around with emulators etc.
