HD Collection is on shelves today (apparently)

It's Captivate 2012 in Rome this week (technically, it started yesterday and ends tomorrow) and Ninja Theory is there. I think there might be an embargo on the event as no news has come out of it, despite Devil May Cry clearly being present.

The HD collection is cool, but it's a little weird that the menus and pre-rendered cut scenes retain their original resolution and aspect ratio.

The embargo on Captivate ends in the week, apparently a release date for the new DMC was announced and it's rumoured to be August 10th.

Honestly!? That's shit. Really shit! The Resi remakes where sloppily done as well.

I loved these games back in the day but that's where they belong.

God of War Collection was also like that.

Yeah, the stuff you play and the in-engine cut scenes are all running in HD but the menus are still 4:3. And all the pre-rendered stuff using enhanced in-engine models. DMC3 has quite a lot of that. So it's a little bit inconsistent with regard to the presentation.

Still, it's a lower price point for 3 games on one disk and means the entire DMC series is now playable for those that missed them originally.

Not sure I agree that DMC 3 belongs in the past. It's pretty much the best game in this genre. Still.

Conversely, the MGS HD trilogy is superbly done. Though the comic cut-scenes in Peace Walker are a little pixely ...

Inconsistent? No, I would call it lazy and unacceptable even at a budget price. If Konami can reproduce such good looking HD versions of MSG classics for a similar price, why can't Capcom do the same?

Bayonetta beats every DMC game by a long way for me. A long long way!

No, he's right. DMC 1/3 are great games and are historically valid for their contribution to the genre, but Bayonetta is the better game.

I hated DMC4. Found it fucking boring. My fave hack & slash is Heavenly Sword  Never played Bayonetta.

You should pick up Bayonetta (or try the demo, even though some people who like the main game don't like the demo), as it's dirt cheap.

In his opinion. Maybe in yours too.

Personally, I find the pace of the action, atmosphere, setting and characters in DMC3 far more to my liking. Bayonetta is great and everything but I can go back and play DMC3 and enjoy it whilst all the... madness of Bayonetta put me off.

I never played Heavenly Sword but I remember the reveal it got at E3 and everyone being stunned by the visuals at the time. I hope Ninja Theory is looking more to the legacy of this series than their own history though, because Heavenly Sword's gameplay didn't go down all the well. Come to think of it, neither did the action aspect of Enslaved. Still, the gameplay footage released so far looks thumping and very slick.

Looking forward to reading some impressions next week.

By that logic, we can "meh" every game in every genre bar the one at the top.

So now we're playing a couple of games a year. If that. On the plus side, we did just save a load of money.
