QuakeCon 2008: The Story of Rage

At the QuakeCon 2008 press conference and keynote address, Carmack confirmed that the content of Rage would exceed two Xbox 360 discs yet would fit on one high-capacity Blu-ray disc for the PlayStation 3. Since it's not cost effective to release a game on three discs because of material costs and a hefty royalty fee levied by Microsoft, Carmack said they would have to sacrifice the quality of the visuals on the 360 in order to fit the game on two discs. Unless Microsoft is willing to work with id on the disc royalty fees, the PlayStation 3 version will simply look better, Carmack said.

That's not good. Lost Odyssey was on 4 disks though, so I call BS about it not being cost effective. I think id just like moaning about MS.

Simple solution......install it on the hard disk.
Or just raise the price of the product buy a few quid.
The leavy on disks is probably a matter of pennies I bet.
It's funny how they can fit something like Mass Effect on one disc.
Anyway it wont matter how many disks this game comes on if it's shit like Doom 3.

Since when did we get to the stage where games need 20+ gigs of space. It's insane.

The graphics are nothing like Mass Effects though.

quite easy really, the textures are clearly super compressed, due to the pop in you get, the voice acting can be compressed quite a bit and the only slightly interesting location was the citadel :)

The textures are actully layered and pop in occurs when it's loading in the extra layers of detail.
You would have a texture map in low res then a detail map for high res and other maps like a normal map, specular and lighting map etc etc.

Excuses because they cant be arsed compressing more like, shift the blame from id diehards from them to MS more like.

Didn't MS publish it though?

That is true, and probably has something to do with it.

Why don't developers ever use double sided disks?

they could still have it on two disks, but with twice as much data that way.

They said the same thing about UT3 on 360 but ended up putting more content on it.

But the graphics on UT3 and Mass Effect are nowhere near as detailed as this. Hence the amount of space needed. iD Software are not shit at compression, they're coding ninjas. And it's not Carmack having a dig at Microsoft either because he has mentioned the pros and cons for both consoles.

Oh, I'm sure that he has his reasons for saying it but he has claimed this before and was proved wrong.

There are bigger DVDs than 9GB DVDs so maybe Microsoft could open up to the bigger sizes?

Which is what Carmack was hoping for. Unless Microsoft make some concessions then it'll be on 2 discs.

I'm no expert here so excuse the blatant Wikipedia abuse:

You can get DVD-18's which use two sides and 4x layered giving you 17.08GB of data. I guess if you had to flip the DVD upside down it could be a bitch as it's the same as having two DVDs (not from a cost perspective mind).

If I was at Microsoft I'd try and open up to the bigger sizes if it's at all possible. Maybe it's not?
