oil...

Postby Harry on Thu Mar 01, 2012 11:10 pm

I've been thinking for the last few days about what's going to happen when oil runs out.
This decade its expected that we will demand more than the world can produce.
At this point the only way demand will go is up as population grows, at this point the only way supply will go is down.
We will run out of oil in our lifetimes.
Apparently no other fuel can even come close to what we get from oil.
Also these other fuels normally need oil in there production somewhere down the line.
Just think...
Planes will be grounded.
Car will be useless.
Supermarkets won't be able to take deliveries.
Ambulances won't be able pick people up.
No heating
The financial situation would completely collapse.
...so what do we do?
Does this not scare anyone considering how soon we will feel the effects of this situation beginning?

No. The La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo is holding back another energy source until such a time comes. :ugeek:

The west would survive as the infrastructure for renewable energy and hydrogen fuel cells has been building up for a while now. Give it a few years and Hydrogen pumps will be a regular site at petrol stations the same way charging points for electric cars are starting to appear in city centres. There will be a big struggle for settling into the new fuel source. I suspect a lot of small companies will go out of business and people will lose a lot of money as they either struggle to afford the rising cost of petrol or are forced into buying a brand new car. The government will probably introduce a scrappage scheme but it won't be enough to help some people.

Batteries not hydrogen fuel cells are a more realistic outcome for the switch from oil. They are extremely easy to make and can be recycled. Hydrogen will play a part in the future but not the near future.

I watched the documentry "the crude awakening" just last night and every one they were interviewing said these alternative forms of energy won't even come close to the power of oil.
Something like 3 units of oil needed to just make 1 unit of hydrogen.
Even with all the know forms of alternative energy put together it still wouldn't be any where near a small percentage of replacing oil.
Oil is pretty much the most important thing to man....apart from breasts.
Its in everything we do. Everything!
Even this phone runs on 2 stroke

I honestly wouldn't trust just 1 documentary. Hydrogen as a fuel is expensive to make that's the reason why I don't count it as near future material. You can create lithium batteries using sea water and the recycling process from dead batteries returns 100% performance back to the battery. The fact is though if you don't live in a place that has access to either Sun wind or tide you're kind of screw from the get go.

That as well but i would say in future it will shift from fission to fusion scientists have recently made some breath throws with fusion.

Apparently if we went plutonium only that could just last 10 years if we used it a much a oil.
its something we all have to think about because a peak could happen in just 5 years, after that its all down hill.

Are those figures from the documentary? What are they in as well? Gallons? Litres? Also China has 2 billion people, their carbon footprint is going to be so much bigger than the rest of us.

You all need to get this watched:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... _on_Earth/

The oil isn't going to run out soon, there's still huge reserves of it, it's just in places that are hard to reach and with that comes higher costs to reach it and higher costs to the customer. In this program they do the sums on renewables, nuclear etc. and it's just not possible to make the number of wind turbines, nuclear reactors, bio-fuel farms etc. etc. we need. Fusion power is the only solution.

We're going to get to a point soon where we're going to have to seriously fund fusion power, it's the only solution, it's stupidly underfunded, which is why it's always 50 years off. Last year we spent more money on phone ringtones than on nuclear research.
