The pricing is whacked out around here. Only thing is, I don't have to run a car as a result. I work at the company head office, which is walking distance. Ideally, I just need a higher paid job in that company and I'd be sitting pretty. Or... prettier. That, or I need a sugar-mummie.

*Googles*

... Don't know why these results surprise me

Why not get a job for a different company? You're limiting yourself to quite a low salary at the moment.

Why not live within your means and not go for something so expensive?

I work for G4S, doing investigations into various discrepancies, attacks on couriers etc etc. So I basically sit around all day, pissing off staff all over the country by highlighting mistakes. That, or proving other companies wrong, which pisses them off instead.

I've been pissing people off for years

G4S Security I assume? That's bizarre because the company I work for handles a lot of their recruitment.

Sounds like a pretty good job though. We were working on a role for a famous ticket-reselling company a few months ago which was basically someone to keep an eye out for fraud.

Yeah, http://www.g4s.com on the cash side. It's a massive company and I've worked with/for a number of people who have progressed pretty rapidly through the business. Where I am now has a bit of a glass ceiling and the people above are mooning me. But I've got a review coming up and intend to stress my desire for a new challenge. Read... "Want Mo Moneys"

My only concern (and concern for others) is that with the financial climate the way it is, jumping out of what is currently quite a secure job might not be smart. I've seen people make moves in the past, and walk right into redundancy with no path back. Which is pretty messed up!

If you're living at home Mobi, now is the time to take the risk of seeing what else is out there.

Since the start of this thread, I moved to London November 2011 and I've been working in Holborn ever since. Not great wage and I'm paying rent for my own one bedroom flat in South London. Between travelling costs, rent and bills, spending about 90% of my wage each month. I might just stick around here for 12 months and then go back to Ireland. Haven't decided yet.

I disagree. Do not jump ship and take that risk in the current climate.

Exactly.

At the moment, having a job is the most important.

Oh, I've no intention of jumping ship for the sake of it. The money I would rinse through in the short term is better off being added to savings. More deposit = lower mortage repayments = better.

What we all need is a mate to share the load.

I got promoted while I was away in Australia being a slacker, sweet!

I agree, having a job is the most important thing and now I'm off temp contracts at least I have more security of money coming in. However for me and my friends the only chance we have of moving out is renting or buying a place together, but not many of my friends have the savings. I could technically afford a deposit no problem, but my wage would make the mortgage repayments crippling so I'm a bit stuck. I don't really want to pay off someone else's mortgage.

£155k for a 1 bedroom flat? My 1 bedroom flat cost £50k.

I would say 50% of my wage goes on bills and even a lot of those are not "essential" things.

I'm still working at the same place I've been working at for 6 years now. Pays not great but its piss easy and the hours are sweet.

My pay is still exactly the same as it was last year - no pay rise, though I did recently move to a magazine that is much smaller (i.e. I have to write a lot less), and is much more interesting (it's about the live entertainment industry, so I get to write about gigs and events like the Red Bull X Fighters and MMA, as opposed to corporate IT strategy).

I'm going to give it three months on this mag, and then ask for a pay rise (the group this magazine is in is doing far better than the one I was working in, so they have more money - I should be able to get another £200-£300 a month out of them with any luck).
