You're probably on cable so for you no benefit. Many places in the UK cannot get cable as the network doesn't cover most towns and only larger built up areas. Fibre Optic is the high speed alternative for us guys as we can use our existing phone line. BT lay the fibre to the cabinets where every ones phone lines link in so that only a small portion of the overall connection is the copper line to the house.

It's not as fast as cable but I think some areas can get 72mb fibre optic but I'm not sure on the conditions of that. I'm sure upgrades will come in the future.

Actually, most (the very vast majority) of cable networks in the UK are optic fibre and have been for the last 20+ years.

All major networks are fibre, it's cheaper than laying copper over long distances, as copper needs to be terminated and amplified over much shorter runs than fibre.

Cable co's in the UK use FTTC which BT have just started doing, the short distance from the cab will be copper, this is because it's cheaper to maintain and fix if somebody sticks a shovel through it in their garden etc.

Anyway VDSL2 in the UK currently is available at 80 down 40 up BT, SKY, TalkTalk all offer that as a pro package.

I get the 40/10 package as its not practical to network my house up right now and wifi limits me to around 36meg at the best of times.

My exchange finally upgraded to ADSL2 on Wednesday. I went from this.

I think its about time I upgraded to fibre. Although i'm happy with the service from BE, for an extra £5 per month I could have BT infinity. I will repost once I have upgraded.

A whole lot better than me.

I'm like 2 down 0.10 up. It's shockingly bad. I feel like I'm stuck in the Noughties with my connection. Openreach saying my exchange will have fibre-optic by September. Problem is its like 3-4 miles away from me and I'm not sure where the nearest green box to me is... Would I still be able to get fibre optic broadband?

Either that or wait for cable to come to my area... Which will never happen.

I'm on BT Infinity - option2 which is "upto" 76. We're pretty far from the cabinet but I'm happy with the speed and reliability (and this test was done with loads of stuff using the connection)

Ah, that's put my worries at ease. Just hoping they stick to their September deadline.

Sucks as when I lived in the city centre I was on about 25 down and I've taken one mega step backwards with the connection I have now. Feels like Im on dialup at times. I may as well be on dialup!

Yea, I was more than a little apprehensive about going to "the dreaded" BT but their estimated speeds and actual speeds aren't bad at all. Considering I'm in a pretty rural area I really can't complain at all.

I went from cable when I lived with my parents to BT and honestly the package I'm on my speed has never dipped compared to the heavily traffic controlled virgin media broadband. I would consistently drop in speed due to the combined usage of my family.

I get shit response from all the Scottish/N. English servers. You should try the London ones and see if there's a change.

Yeah, a lot of people forget these broadband speeds are going to out pace a lot of peoples wifi. Once you get to 100mb+ you'll be pushing the limit on some wired connections or routers/hubs too.

Once you're 40mb plus, it's all the same anyway, most servers top client connections out around 2-3MB/s. So anything extra is more for multitasking your connection.
