Monitor housemates internet traffic

Postby RIghto Fred on Mon Jan 30, 2012 7:18 pm

Hi.

I pay for Virgin 10mb broadband in my house and recently a new housemate moved in and asked if they could pay to share it. Ever since this has happened the internet has become very slow (so slow that it regularly won't even open a webpage without me resetting the router/modem). This did not happen before she moved in. I asked her if she downloads a lot, streams videos or acquires torrents, but she has denied it all. Is there a program/way to allow me to see how much she is downloading? I must stress that I don't care about her passwords, etc, I just want to know the quantity of her downloading to see whether or not she is a lying little bitch. Also, if she is downloading massive amounts of illegal files and it is traced, everything will come back in my name.

I did Google this and found a program called NetMeter, but it only seemed to track my downloads. I don't want to invade her privacy by physically installing a program on her computer, I just want some sort of remote monitoring. I have the sole access to the router settings, diagnostics and logs, if that helps? Thanks in advance compadres.

Are you using the standard Virgin router?

Cut off her internet. If it's no longer slow, then she is a lying little bitch.

Installed this but can't seem to see her traffic, only mine?

DogEyedBoy wrote:Are you using the standard Virgin router?

Yep. I've logged into the router and had a good look around, but can't seem to find the right option (if it exists)?

On your advice I have just done so. Let's see if I can now stream a YouTube video without having to pause it every 10 seconds.

10Mb internet isn't much if you're both using Youtube HD or something. I mean usually it should be fine, but if she's excessive then yeah it would grind to a halt.

I think she's either lying or she has programs running in the background that use bandwidth that she doesn't know about.

Women and computers don't generally mix so she's probably installed some virus which is raping bandwidth when it's on.

Why have I mentioned rape twice in a thread about internet traffic?

10mb virgin broadband at peak times only has about 800mb down allowance even without her downloading the combined usage of you both would put you into their traffic control policy which slows your internet down for 5 hours at the point you go over the allowance.

Keltic probably has this right. You're probably hitting the limit and getting reduced to 2.5Mb. Then add in a once things start slowing doing everyone makes it worse by click everything over and over.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've read it all.

The girl hasn't paid her share of the internet bill since January, so I've cut her off (guilt-free).

But the thing we all want to know is whether or not the internet is fine now.

Either that or you could need a new router - they don't have such a great lifespan.

Er what? I've used some routers for 4-5 years at a time non-stop.
