Kindle Fire

Postby MoBiUGeArSkIn on Thu Sep 29, 2011 7:07 pm

It's a Kindle... ON FIRE!!!

What You Need to Know

I'm interested to see what happens here. The Kindle is a very popular piece of kit and the Fire, unsurprisingly, has gone straight to the top of Amazon.com's top seller list. The price is very competitive and it's clear Amazon are looking to take a chunk of the tablet market. With that price, they might even secure a lot of impulse buys.

I'm not really down with this whole tablet thing though.

Already sharing a thread here: viewtopic.php?f=39&t=62601

Although I guess it makes sense to have its own dedicated one. It's probably the only actual competition for the iPad, after all.

It's not got the best specs, but it has the brand name and the ecosystem, and for what its aimed at the specs aren't an issue. The first real competition for the iPad, after however many failed tablets everyone else has already launched.

I thought the regular Kindle was pretty cool. Although I wouldn't buy one, mainly because there were no Hellboy comics on it at the time and I liked owning the physical books... This was many months before I ran out of room for the physical book collection, which is spilling out onto the floor

I guess it's a good idea for them to focus on some existing Kindle specifics and just present them better (ie, like an iPad).

EDIT - This video pretty much shows everything

It'll definitely be on my Xmas list. Wanted a kindle before but it was a bit to basic for me. This looks great considering the price

I still think 7" is too small. I've never thought my iPad needs to be smaller, if anything I'd like it a touch bigger.

This will sell a shit ton at that price, that is not in doubt. But I think people who are think they'll be buying an iPad equivalent at less than half the price are going to be disappointed further down the line as that hit the limitations of the device pretty quickly.

8Gb is not going to last too long.

Going to be interested in the reviews when they come out.

Xmas 2012? Apparently it won't be over here until next June.

Maybe but in the demonstration he points out about cloud based services so the amount the device can hold isn't really a problem. I'm getting it not only for to buy and read books but to be able to download and or stream movies and play games it suits my needs perfectly. In the long run what it's been designed for suits it extremely well especially when you have such a big content provider like Amazon behind it.

But if you're relying on Streaming then it's going to be shit on holidays or whilst traveling where a net connection is shit even if it exists.

The cloud is great, but until connections are ubiquitous and fast, you need to have local storage.

I want one, it basically does all the things i want and its less than half the price of an ipad.

I dont know a lot about these tablets but this seems the best for what i want. basically a bit of web browsing, reading books and playing games that can only be played on these tablet thingys.

Isnt it out in october?

As an iPad owner, this does nothing for me. It's too small, Android and it's apps are still meh and it's just not "there" for me.

As a tech-guy however, this is very interesting and easily the biggest competition to Apple. Amazon has solid services for music, movies, e-books and cloud storage. Kindle is a well known name now and Amazon is a powerhouse. The cheap price for some fairly good hardware and the highly customised AndroidOS looks like it gives an original and strong tablet experience.

This will sell really well and fits the needs for people who find iPads too pricey, too fancy or just too "Apple" for their tastes. It is weird that essentially a shop understands the music, book, movie and now the tablet Market better than most tech-companies who rely on it.

Shame it's Android, but at least they're building their own custom version rather than dump Honeycomb on there.

I think Amazon's biggest mistake is not having it out worldwide next week.

Next June for the rest of the world? Right... so what will essentially be a one year old device – with all the trouble of hyping up such a thing – will be swept away by going up against the iPad 3.

Well done Amazon *golfclap*

Not really. Apple and Amazon both understand content. The tech companies only understand hardware and specs – hence the retarded marketing approach that Xoom took (i.e. telling everyone in the room that it had a much bigger cock than the iPad and everyone could suck it, except out of the 100 people in the room, 90% of them were straight men or lesbians who couldn't care less).

And let's face it. Tablets are all about the content. The only specs that matter are screen size, connectivity and storage size.

It's out next year over here? That seems dumb. Could have dominated Christmas.

That makes me wonder how soon they'll revise the unit though? iDevices are a yearly thing, right? Would they ship the Fire in the UK and then release a new one less than six months later in the US? Gotta keep up.
