Windows 8

Postby Born2beSlicker on Wed Jun 01, 2011 11:38 pm

Alright, so Microsoft doesn't allow embedding of their first video with Windows 8.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p92QfWOw88I

It's very damn pretty! It's WinMo7 blown up onto a PC.

I think it looks great! I wasn't really paying attention in the video, but is the panels idea going to be the desktop, or just an integrated part of it (like windows media centre)?

I agree with John Gruber: http://goo.gl/Z53Qb

Great, but fundamentally flawed. Why oh why have they allowed people to escape back to windows desktop? Access to the file system too? That means "normal" people are still going end up with virus' and fucking up their systems.

If they hadn't done that I think it'd be a real contender.

Still they have put some good stuff out there, it really makes iOS look old. About time for a significant iOS upgrade?

There's a very windows 7 like os under there keltic, you can just not use the tablet front end if you want

I think it looks great myself. Don't think I'd be worried about the viruses.

Just because I don't use windows on a day to day bases doesn't mean I don't see it's uses (Games)

Also love how you're so anti-linux.

Dave, if you have both operating systems, what makes you choose to use Linux rather than Windows? I'm genuinely interested as I would prefer to use Linux as it is free and open source, thus meaning that using Linux would support my beliefs, but for day to day stuff, Windows has greater compatability with needed products.

Now that I have been provided with a work laptop, I am tempted to use Unbuntu as most of my home computing does not require many programs, but my last memory of installing Ubuntu is of not being able to find a driver for my built in webcam, nor trackpad! Most frustrating . Is Ubuntu still considered the most user friendly for newbies?

Ubuntu is still the best in regards to user friendliness

I use Ubuntu linux because it isn't a resource hog, it's free :P, has great integration with social networking sites with it's built in app, it's very secure and since it's linux I don't need anti virus but I do use the UFW firewall frontend which configs the already existing firewall to be a bit more secure.

Sometimes you do come across lack of support with drivers but in general they are few and far between now from my experience.

I use to love windows but stability, security and the need for anti virus, spyware detectors and the lot got on my nerves. I only really use the partition for games I know I can't get working on Wine.

Same, albeit swap Linux with Mac OSX.

Ubuntu offer a great version that you can install from within windows, try it, if you don't like it go to add/remove programs and uninstall it, it's that simple.

I'd put it above osx by some distance and just slightly behind windows 7 and before anyone starts I use all 3 on a day to day basis for work.

Quoted from source.
Teknylate.com and Insideris.com have reported that with the next versions of Microsoft’s PC operating system, Windows 8, will include the function to allow users to play Xbox 360 games on their PC’s.

I posted this in my google+ but thought I would post it here too. Pretty interesting if true.

That doesn't make sense for a few reasons:

1) GFWL is free, XBL is not. Microsoft tried to get PC players to pay and that bombed, but if they took away fees on XBL people would feel ripped off. If PC was free while 360 costs but they get the same games on the same service people would revolt.

2) Microsoft very quickly ditched the PC vs 360 aspect of online games, as KB+M always kicked the pad's ass. The thing about console gaming is that everybody gets the same hardware so it's an even playing field. If I'm playing Halo 4 against a guy with a tricked out PC that gets a higher frame-rate than myself, he's going to win. That's bullshit.

3) They risk making their console seem redundant to a section of the market. Microsoft wants you on both XBL and GFWL, not one over the other.

Microsoft did start off the Xbox 360’s life with no backwards compatibility and no promise in the future. Fast forward and you see Microsoft not only allowed original Xbox discs to be played in the system, but started hosting the best of the library as downloadable titles.

This is also backwards. The 360 started with B.C. support and it grew for 2 years then stopped. They released a dozen or so Xbox Originals for download and stopped because almost nobody bought them.

Now, if the Xbox 3 is not B.C. then all our Xbox Live Arcade and digital games no longer exist. That is not going to happen.
