Parks & Recreation (US TV comedy) - Netflix US & BBC4

Postby Tezcatlipoca on Sun May 13, 2012 12:12 pm

Fucking excellent comedy on NBC in the US, starring Amy Poehler, Nick Offerman, Aziz Ansari and more. Rob Lowe joined at the end of season 2.

Season 1 was a little iffy (but only 6 eps), but season 2 onwards have been brilliant.

I'm not sure whether this is my favourite comedy, or Modern Family.

It has never been shown in the UK :( Seasons 1-3 are available on US Netflix. The latest season shown on US TV is season 4 (just finished).

Keltic Dave watches it... anyone else?

Wikipedia wrote:Parks and Recreation is an American comedy television series on NBC led by Amy Poehler, who stars as Leslie Knope, a perky, mid-level bureaucrat in the parks department of Pawnee, a fictional town in Indiana. It was conceived by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur and debuted on April 9, 2009. The show has run for three full seasons and is currently airing its fourth. It uses a single-camera, mockumentary filming style. The Parks and Recreation staff tried to differentiate their show from The Office through differences in filming technique, and decided in favor of multiple camera angles and frequent jump cuts. Unlike the tightly scripted English version of The Office, improvisation is encouraged, and often makes the final cut.[citation needed]

The writers researched local California politics for the show, and consulted with urban planners and elected officials. The Leslie Knope character underwent minor changes after the first season in response to audience feedback that she seemed unintelligent and "ditzy". The writing staff tried to incorporate current events into their episodes, such as a government shutdown in Pawnee inspired by the real-life global financial crisis. Several guest stars have been featured in the show, and these characters often appear in multiple episodes.

Parks and Recreation received generally mixed reviews during its first season; many critics saw it as too similar to The Office. However, after a reapproach to its format and tone, it is now widely accepted by critics and fans of all ages that the quality of the second and third seasons rank it amongst the best current shows on television. Since it was reformatted, Parks and Recreation has received several awards and nominations, including an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series and two Emmy nominations for Poehler's performance. The show also has a large online fan base devoted to the character Ron Swanson. Despite the critical acclaim, Parks and Recreation has struggled in the Nielsen ratings throughout its run on NBC.

On May 11, 2012, Parks and Recreation was renewed for a fifth season.

We got it on OSN over here (equiv of Sky). Never really got into it, but I might give it another go.

Yeah I love it. Might only get one more short season though :(

At times I wish I was Ron Swanson

I'm watching S02E02 at the moment, the first season was a little weak. I tried watching it when it began but stopped for some reason.

So I just finished watching S4. It definitely improves after S1. Some hilarious episodes.

This finally started here in the UK on BBC4 last week (Wednesday, 10pm).

They're showing two eps at a time: 1 & 2 last Wednesday, 3 & 4 Wednesday this week...

All four shown so far are on iPlayer, although eps 1 & 2 expire in one day.

As I said last year, season 1 is weaker than subsequent seasons but it is still worth sticking with as it becomes awesome from season 2 onwards.
