I loved it.

It slots into the existing ALIEN franchise snugly but expands way beyond those other films. Which is ideal because the "Alien" itself has basically been run into the ground.

Can't believe you fob off the idea of this film being big on Lovecraftian elements. It is a tech heavy version of "At the Mountains of Madness"... and that's before the tentacles show up!

My only real issues with this film is that it feels too short. As such, a lot of questions it raises either go unanswered or cheaply dodged at speed.

No doubt an even more elaborate sequel is on the cards.

I saw it last night.

I didn't love it, but I liked it. I don't think it's as good as Alien, but it's certainly better than Alien 3 and Resurrection.[And of Scott's own films, it's a hell of a lot better than Robin Hood]

Very interesting expansion of the universe, backstory...

Reviews are spot-on about Fassbender. Great performance, owning every scene he was in. I didn't think much of the rest of the cast, except for Elba.

Definitely think it needed to be longer. Hopefully there will be a DC at some point. I have read that there was a lot of footage that didn't make it in the the final cut...

I agree with Tez, though I might rate Alien 3 as just a little better.

Some of the reviews iv read say you shouldnt even compare it to Alien. Its nothing like those films in tone or atmosphere. Its a different beast altogether. A thinking mans summer blockbuster.

I need to see it.

It would have been an altogether better film if it had had no association with Alien.

It finds itself in this odd middle ground. It neither commits far enough to the franchise or stands firm enough on its own. It feels like Scott wanted to make an entirely new film, which the first 2 acts could almost be, then someone convinced him to link it to Alien. His comments as development progressed also seem to indicate this.

Of the various questions it leaves unanswered, one that I'd actually quite like to know is this:

WTF does Shaw believe that the "Engineers" (Space Jockeys) created life on Earth?

OK, fine, all those cave paintings and glyphs etc. from all those different civilisations suggest some sort of link between them, with them worshipping the same "giant beings", and so on, but why go from that (aliens visiting several thousand years ago a la Stargate) to "the aliens also visited billions of years ago and seeded life"? It just doesn't make any sense at all.

There are 3 or 4 massive plot holes and thats just 1 of them. I have found thinking more about the film actually makes it seem worse.

The film is set in a future with advanced science. All the clues in those paintings show disparate, ancient peoples from our planet worshipping larger versions of ourselves. They're effectively worshipping Gods. They're also pointing to the same constellation. Why would heading to that focal point not lead to answers regarding our origins on Earth if the "star map" is pointing to the Gods? God is credited with the creation of all life.

How is this a jump? It makes total sense.

I'd love to know what these plot holes are? I'm sure we can fill them here.

I am sure we can. Like you just tried to do, while linking things that dont really link. If you try hard enough they make sense. But you shouldnt have to make logic leaps, that just means the story hasnt been told well. Far to much seems to be have been cut from the film and I would go into other examples, but Mobi, it sounds like your desperate to explain how awesome the film was, so why bother?

How doesn't it link?

Tez just described images of people worshipping Gods and then said "why does she think they seeded Earth?"

FFS... BECAUSE THEY'RE GODS!!! It's one of the most ancient concepts! God.Make.Man!

So what are they, show me these holes? I'll spend a rough number of seconds giving you what I perceive to be obvious answers.

Thought provoking cinema... Ah... My old Nemesis!

LOL OK. Ill give you one.

Ginger geologist gets acid blood to the face and yet turns into a super zombie. To me that just looked like a contrived way to insert a pretty shit action scene, but go on, tell me why that happened. The only other direct infection was Shaws rather pointless BF, he just seemed to get unwell

Here is another.

In relation to pointless super zombie attack. How big is the crew of the Prometheus? Zombie guy killed loads of them, crew that seemed to come from nowhere and were never mentioned again or seen before. Oh and on top of this, how is it possible that a small ship with a relatively large crew can always be empty enough that people can sneak about?

And another...

If you are going to be lame enough to use a flute as a way of securing your bridge systems, why have an automatic playback system that shows the visitor from a race of people you hate, as it turns out and is never resolved, how to access the systems?

And yet another....

After she wakes up from being sedated by David, Shaw finds it pretty easy to escape from the medics and run to Vickers’ quarters with no-one chasing her. No-one comes for the entire time she is in there. Which connects to my earlier point about the size of the ship and number of the crew seeming to change regularly. Also, does everyone have amazing staterooms?

Oooooh and another....

When blonde bad ladt and Shaw are running from the crashing spaceship, why do they not run sideways?

Re: PROMETHEUS

Postby Tezcatlipoca on Sun Jun 03, 2012 4:25 pm

Regarding my one: Sorry Mobi, still don't think it's a logical jump.

Just because various disparate ancient cultures all worshipped the same giant beings several thousand years ago does not logically mean that those same giant beings also happened to visit Earth several billion years ago and create life itself by seeding the primordial soup. It does not follow. All it means is that the giant beings visited several thousand years ago and were worshipped as gods by the various disparate cultures.

There is no logical reason for Shaw to think the "Engineers" visited Earth billions of years ago and created life, just because she has evidence that they visited thousands of years ago. She's supposed to be a scientist, but her hypothesis has nothing to support it. The Ginger Redshirt even called her on it, and all she said was "it is what I choose to believe". That's bollocks. Why does she think that? What does she use to support her position?
