In the book, everything was building up to this moment, you sensed that it was going to be massive. All the schemes Tyrion put into place lead to this. sadly, the show didn't really make this apparant. There was no chain, no training of the archers and catapult users and they didn't make wildfire a big deal before this.
You never really see battles in the books, they are more heard about and you see the repercussions of these fights. Game of Thrones was never about sword fights and epic battles. That's what Lord of the Rings is for. In Thrones, we get complex and brilliant characters and don't get me wrong, I love action as much as the next guy but Game of Thrones is not an action show, it is a drama first and fore-most.
That may be so, but you have to think, theres are 55 minute episodes, and theres 10 of them verses a 700 page book, there is a limit on what can be taken from that, and as Cow says, it was done very well in the manner that was possible. Plus we still have the last episode to go, and I see that being split into two main characters, Jon and Daenerys
